A gateway to the wonders of Isabela Island
Tucked away in the lush, green highlands of Isabela Island, just 12 km (7.5 miles) or a short 12-minute drive from Puerto Villamil on the coast, Campo Duro Ecolodge is the perfect base for discovering the extraordinary landscapes and unique wildlife of this remote and enchanting archipelago.
Family-owned ecolodge
With over 25 years of experience, Campo Duro is a family-owned ecolodge and tortoise sanctuary committed not only to sustainability but to regeneration whenever possible— actively nurturing the land and its ecosystems for future generations.
Located in the highlands
Nestled in the peaceful highland region known locally as la parte alta, on the slopes of the majestic Sierra Negra Volcano and near the small village of Esperanza, the lodge sits over 200 metres above sea level.
Here, above the white sand beaches, coastal mangroves, and the stark, moon-like lava fields of the lowlands, this unique lodge enjoys a refreshing climate – less humid, with abundant greenery and pleasant temperatures both day and night year-round.
More than just a place to stay
Campo Duro Ecolodge offers more than accommodation — it’s an immersive experience in nature; a sanctuary for rest, freedom, and tranquillity. Here, you will be gently enveloped by the sounds of nature: the soft rustle of tropical fruit trees in the breeze, the melodic chorus of birdsong, and the soothing, meditative hum of insects as day fades into dusk.
Authentic Galápagos Experience
We offer an authentic Galápagos experience — an oasis of peace where you can truly unwind, and where the worries of the world seem to melt away. If you are seeking a serene retreat, shared with gentle giant tortoises and off the beaten path, this is the place for you.
Reconnect with nature and yourself
At Campo Duro, every moment invites you to reconnect — with yourself, with the land, and with the pristine beauty of the Galápagos Islands.
Our ecolodge is a haven for birdwatching, observing and learning about our giant tortoises, or simply gazing up at a magnificent sky full of stars, completely unspoilt by light pollution.
A perfect base for island exploration
Thanks to our location, Campo Duro is also the perfect starting point for both highland adventures, like hiking the dramatic landscapes of Sierra Negra, Volcán Chico, and Minas Azufre, and coastal activities as snorkelling in the crystal-clear waters of Concha de Perla, biking through the wetlands, or taking a boat tour to explore the Tintoreras Islets and Los Túneles.
For over 25 years, Michuy, the proud and dedicated owner of Campo Duro Ecolodge, and his family have been fortunate to welcome guests to this serene ecolodge and unique campsite, nestled in the heart of the Galápagos’ breathtaking natural beauty.
Where nature and hospitality meet
Our aim has always been to offer guests an authentic, sustainable experience that helps them connect with the extraordinary landscapes and wildlife of the islands. When you stay with us, you will not only be surrounded by majestic giant tortoises but also immersed in a harmonious, eco-friendly environment that reflects our deep commitment to conservation.
From organic farm to ecolodge
Campo Duro began as a traditional organic farm in the highlands. We nurtured the land, grew a variety of crops, and cared for our farm animals with dedication. Over time, the farm evolved into an ecolodge with a campsite and restaurant. Step by step, our traditional farm transformed into a peaceful nature retreat for our guests.
A dream beyond the land
But we dreamed of something greater — of becoming more than caretakers of the land. We envisioned playing a role in the restoration and preservation of the Galápagos ecosystem, with a special focus on the conservation of the iconic giant tortoises. This vision has guided us in transforming Campo Duro into an ecolodge — and, even more importantly, into a refuge and sanctuary for these remarkable creatures.

A way of life
It was a dream come true when, in 2004, Michuy had the great honour of becoming the first — and, to this day, the only — private individual to be appointed padrino (godfather and guardian) of the giant Galápagos tortoises by the Directorate of the Galápagos National Park and the Charles Darwin Foundation.
From farmland to galapaguera
Following this honourable recognition, Michuy began transforming a significant portion of his farmland into a large galapaguera (enclosure) for the tortoises — a semi-natural environment where these majestic reptiles could roam freely.
It became a way of life that, in a new and more profound way, connected Michuy to his land and to Isla Isabela — and ultimately defined the pillars of Campo Duro Ecolodge: a harmonious blend of nature, a passion for the giant tortoises, and a commitment to conservation, all while offering guests an authentic and welcoming ecolodge experience.
Creating a sanctuary for the tortoises
With the arrival of the first 42 young tortoises from the Galápagos National Park came a great responsibility. Beyond providing a safe, natural habitat — including a newly established pond in the galapaguera for the tortoises to cool down in the warm climate — Michuy also had to protect them from potential dangers.
A personal commitment
At that time, poaching was still a risk on the island, with some people continuing to hunt tortoises for meat. Concerned for their safety, Michuy took the precaution of sleeping near the tortoises, ensuring they were protected from poachers, who might have had easier access to them in the galapaguera than in the more remote areas of the national park. He built a platform in one of the massive old mango trees, where, for the first two years, he slept in a tent every night, overseeing the galapaguera.
Thankfully, Campo Duro has never lost a tortoise, and to this day, no tortoises have fallen ill or died at our refuge. Michuy takes immense pride in his role as guardian of these incredible creatures, as well as in his ongoing collaboration with the Galápagos National Park and the Charles Darwin Foundation.

ECO-LODGE
An adventure in nature and sustainable living
Sustainability lies at the heart of everything we do. While perfection is a journey, we are constantly evolving to ensure our operations leave as small a footprint as possible. Our goal is to offer guests an enriching, nature-based experience that honours and respects the environment. We care deeply about nature and are committed to preserving the environment, with a particular focus on the pristine and serene Galápagos Islands.
A journey rooted in nature
Our journey began more than 25 years ago, driven by a desire to offer a more holistic experience of Isla Isabela — one that goes beyond the famed beaches and spectacular wildlife that grace its shores and surrounding ocean. Our vision was, and remains, to provide a low-impact, harmonious adventure in nature.
With deep respect for Pachamama, Mother Earth, we built — and continue to maintain — our ecolodge in the lush green highlands with the utmost care, ensuring minimal environmental impact. It is a unique place in perfect harmony with the natural surroundings, seamlessly blending into the landscape.
Living in harmony with the land
We strive to care for our more than 50,000 square metres of land, home to a remarkable diversity of flowers and plants, including some of the island’s oldest trees — several of which are over 100 years old.
Roughly one-third of our property remains untouched and undisturbed, left to flourish freely in its wild, natural state. This preserved haven of untamed nature nurtures rich biodiversity, offering a safe refuge for birds, butterflies, and other vital wildlife that bring the landscape to life.
Among our most cherished plants are graceful palms, tall bamboo, and a variety of fruit-bearing trees — all watched over by our iconic 250–300-year-old ceibo tree. This ancient giant stands as a living monument to both the resilience of nature and our lasting commitment to sustainability.
Sustainability in everyday life
At Campo Duro, sustainability isn’t just a principle – it’s a way of life. Every choice we make is guided by respect for the land and a desire to tread as lightly as possible. We are always learning and evolving to ensure that our operations leave the smallest possible footprint, and perfection is a constant journey.
From garden to table
In our restaurant, the flavours of Isla Isabela come directly from the earth. We serve only locally and organically grown fruits, vegetables, eggs, and chicken – fresh, seasonal, and full of life. To minimise our ecological impact, fish and shrimp appear on the menu only occasionally. Most of what we serve is harvested straight from our own gardens and land, a living reflection of our commitment to self-sufficiency and sustainable living.
Garden of tropical abundance
Our garden is a living testament to the richness and generosity of our land. Every corner bursts with life – fragrant herbs, fiery chillies, glossy aubergines, and sturdy yuca plants share space with vines of grapes and figs, bright strawberries, juicy watermelon, and golden pineapples ripening in the sun.
Scattered across the property, fruit trees weave a vibrant canopy of colour and flavour: mango, papaya, passion fruit, banana, and plantain mingle with guava, chirimoya, soursop, and orange. Lime and avocado trees stand beside grosella, mulberry, and rose apple, while tall coconut palms sway gently above it all – a living orchard that nourishes both body and spirit.
A sanctuary in nature
Campo Duro Ecolodge is far more than a place to stay – it is a peaceful sanctuary, a refuge where both visitors and Galápagos giant tortoises find shelter and tranquillity. Here, the rhythm of life slows, and the natural world surrounds you, offering a rare connection with nature. Every moment is an invitation to experience something extraordinary in its simplicity – a truly sustainable escape that nourishes both body and spirit.
